As these follicles grow, they release estrogen, which helps thicken the uterine lining in preparation for a potential pregnancy.

Ovulation occurs when the mature egg is released from the dominant follicle in the ovary. This is typically the most fertile time of the cycle. The release of the egg is triggered by a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH). Once released, the egg is captured by the fallopian tube, where it may be fertilized by sperm. This window of fertility lasts about 12-24 hours.

(Days 15-28):

After ovulation, the ruptured follicle transforms into a structure called the corpus luteum, which produces progesterone. This hormone helps maintain the thickened uterine lining for implantation of a fertilized egg. If pregnancy does not occur, the corpus luteum breaks down, causing a drop in progesterone levels, which triggers the shedding of the uterine lining—starting the cycle again with menstruation.
